In the Netherlands, jazz music was banned by the Nazis during the Second World War. A number of young people wanted to keep this music at all costs. They practiced in secret, copied illegal radio broadcasts and were determined to set up a school for jazz music after the war: the Swing College. On the liberation day, 5 May 1945, the Orchestra of the Dutch Swing College had its first performance. The members gave lectures, organised jazz meetings and taught jazz music.
