Shatner’s Bassoon are a quintet of brilliant young Leeds-based composers and improvisers, who are coming to The Golden Lion in Todmorden to premiere a complete show of new material, created and rehearsed in a week in a remote Welsh cottage just prior to the performance.
Since forming in 2010 the group has embarked on two tours of the UK, completed a PRS funded residency program, had a live show featured on BBC Jazz on 3, released three albums on their own label,Wasp Millionaire Records, and has been selected by Jazz North as part of their Northern Line program. Their influences include contemporary artists such as Tim Berne, John Zorn, Frank Zappa, as well as a range of rock and electronica, while their combined experience as musicians includes eastern European folk, Hindustani music, Brazilian music, straight-ahead and free jazz, reggae, metal, contemporary classical and musique concrete. All this feeds into a unique collective sound, where intricate compositional structures develop through improvisation. Highly detailed and original rhythms and melodies emerge from the deconstruction of established musical languages and clichés, to produce music that negotiates a path from the darkly beautiful to the sinister, humorous and surreal....
