A Consultation on Jazz and Spirituality at Brentwood Presbyterian Church

Throughout the summer of 2018, four young jazz musicians have been research associates in the Jesus, Jazz, and Worship Project. They have been interviewing musicians, ministers, and audience/congregation members who attend jazz worship services. This consultation provides an opportunity to hear what they have discovered about the connections between jazz and spirituality. Tom Reynolds and Brian Hayman will join us to provide their take on the data and pose further questions for us to explore in the coming months as the project continues. The opening concert will feature sets by Tom, Brian, and the four jazz musicians who have been doing the research. The subsequent two days are designed to consider short presentations, spend lots of time in conversation with each other, and connect with a broad community interested in the diverse spiritualities that flow through this music. Tom Reynolds is a jazz pianist who just happens to be vice-principal and professor of theology at Emmanuel College in Toronto. He has written widely on jazz and personal spirituality, as well as hospitality and disability.

Brian Hayman is a jazz pianist who heads up the house band for jazz vespers at St. Jude's Anglican Church in Oakville, ON. He also has a consulting company, Getting in the Groove, that uses jazz as a model for organizations and leadership. The connection has to do with conversations that flow like a jazz performance.
