The Chemainus Jazz Festival 2017, expanded this year from one to two days, brings a diverse and eclectic mix of great jazz to the Waterwheel Park stage on Aug 19 and 20.
The festival offers something for every musical taste, from New Orleans style to soul, Latin and even a bit of rock.
“And be sure to get your Mardi Gras bling” included with your admission, advises organizer Pat Selman. It’s available from any of the volunteers at the festival.
Admission is $20 per day or $30 for both days.

The winner of a full scholarship to Berklee College, Kenton Dick performs saxophonist Dick’s own compositions and arrangements of jazz standards with guitarist Andrew Janusson, bassist Tiana Dick and drummer John Lee.
The Ralph Barrat Quartet pays tribute to Frank Sinatra with crooner Barrat singing his favorites from the Ol’ Blue Eyes book, with pianist Tom Vickery, bassist Joey Smith and drummer Ron Joiner.
Sultry songstress Wanda Nowicki combines offbeat bluesy tunes and classic jazz ballads as the "Salt Spring Q' TET", with trumpeter Derrick Milton, guitarist David Lippincott, bassist Ian Van Wyck and drummer Laurent Boucher.
The Iain Duncan quartet, with Duncan on saxophone, Tony Genge on keyboards, fantastic Rob Cheramy on guitar and Jon Miller on drums, plays jazz standards mixed with a few original tunes.
Sunday Aug. 20: Trad/Hot Jazz of New Orleans
Victoria’s CanUS Dixieland jazz band, featuring pianist Toni Blodgett, plays New Orleans style jazz with three-part vocal harmonies, with saxophonist Doug Rhodes, trumpeter Alfons Fear, saxophonist Tom Ackerman, bassist Joey Smith and drummer Don Leppard.
The Bastion Band plays lyrical, bluesy and unhurried takes on the compositions of Jelly Roll Morton, W.C. Handy and Louis Armstrong, with Alfons Fear on trumpet, Joe Hatherill on clarinet, Aaron Watson on guitar and saw, Stephen Brown on piano, guitar and vocals, Joey Smith on bass and Denny Box on drums.
Andrew Homzy’s 10-piece NOLA NightHawks play authentic New Orleans-flavoured arrangements by conductor Homzy.
Victoria music teacher and saxophonist Jonnie Bridgman performs tunes in the trad-jazz oeuvre with his combo, which includes songstress Shanna Dance, pianist Richard Whitehouse, bassist Ryan Tandy and drummer Kelby MacNayr.
Dixie Sweethearts sextet, with Avram McCagherty on banjo and vocals, Al Pease on clarinet, Toni Blodgett on piano, Alfons Fear on trumpet, Don Cox on tuba and Matt Pease on drums, play in the New Orleans style reminiscent of Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong.
