As part of the "Directed by Jazz" project, we want to bring closer the work of the most eminent creators of world jazz, who have always been remembered by many generations of musicians and listeners. The invited musicians will present original arrangements of the songs, presenting an overview of the works of the selected artist. There will also be plenty of their own interpretations and improvisations. Each time the line-up will be a thematic reflection of the presented artist. Concerts as part of "Directed by Jazz" is on the one hand a meeting with the history of jazz and on the other hand a great opportunity to listen to the unique representatives of this genre....

Michel Petrucciani (28 December 1962 – 6 January 1999) - overcame the effects of osteogenensis imperfecta (a bone disease that greatly stunted his growth) to become a powerful pianist. Originally greatly influenced by Bill Evans and to a lesser extent Keith Jarrett, Petrucciani developed his own individual voice. He started by playing in the family band with his guitarist father and bassist brother. At the age of 15 he had the opportunity to play with Kenny Clarke and Clark Terry, and at 17 he made his first recording. Petrucciani toured France with Lee Konitz in a duo (1980) and moved to the U.S. in 1982. At that time he coaxed Charles Lloyd out of retirement and toured with his quartet, a mutually beneficial relationship. Petrucciani was a strong attraction in the U.S., usually playing with a quartet (sometimes featuring Adam Holzman’s synthesizer for color) or as a soloist; in 1986 he recorded at Montreux with Jim Hall and Wayne Shorter. Although Petrucciani’s ability to overcome his affliction was admirable, his impressive playing stood by itself; he died of a pulmonary infection on January 6, 1999. ~ Scott Yanow

Eddy Louiss (2 May 1941 – 30 June 2015) - has spent most of his career leading his own group in France, but twice has made particularly notable recordings, both on organ. He had sung as a member of the Double Six (1961-1963), played piano with Johnny Griffin in the mid-'60s, and worked at times with Kenny Clarke and Jean-Luc Ponty. But he is best-known for recording Dynasty with Stan Getz (1971) and for his duet set with pianist Michel Petrucciani (1994) on Dreyfus.
