In 1983, DC neighborhood Adams Morgan was in the midst of a renaissance of newly emerging and vibrant music scene. In the midst of that stride, word quickly spread about a new singing sensation and her dazzling band that repeatedly packed the house at Mr. Henry’s nightclub.

Julia & Company is led by Julia Nixon, a dynamic powerhouse singer with a four octave vocal range. Her band was graced by some of the finest musical talents in the area including pianist & longtime musical collaborator Dave Ylvisaker. You never knew exactly who would be on stage with Julia and Dave each night, but it was certain that you would leave shaking your head in disbelief at what you had just seen and heard. The impeccable rhythm section was comprised of brothers Gary and Greg Grainger, who were most often providing the bedrock while a rotating cast of stellar talents would show up to play. Audiences attending Julia & Company performances were treated to epic versions of rhythm & blues and soul hits like “Do Right Woman” “Midnight Train to Georgia”, “At Last” and “Rays Rock House”. Julia was also able to draw from her love of pop, gospel, show tunes, rock & jazz to keep listeners on their toes and up on their feet. Her magnetic showmanship and dynamic presence on stage has led to an impressive international career that has now spanned across four decades. She earned the role of Effie (replacing Jennifer Holliday) in “Dream Girls”, as well as a Helen Hayes award for Best Actress in a Musical. Julia’s great sense of humor is a secret weapon of hers. It is always a treat to hear her hilarious ad libs during a performance.

Julia & Company’s success soon found them in the recording studio. They charted several hits, including a #1 dance smash in the U.K. with “Breaking Down”. Julia has toured and performed with Richard Pryor, Tina Turner, Herbie Hancock, The Blackbyrds and many others. Julia has performed at the White House, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall as well as in Tokyo, Paris, London, Switzerland, Africa, and Russia.
