Rhythm Café, Saturday, Nov 12 2-4 pm, Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, 1901 Fort Place, SE, Washington, DC - The museum recognizes Duke Ellington collaborator Billy Strayhorn in this centennial tribute program as part of the East of the River DC Jazz Festival featuring a stellar performance by the Carl Grubbs Jazz Ensemble. An alto, soprano and tenor saxophonist from Philadelphia, Grubbs received his early training from John Coltrane. Coltrane borrowed some of the storytelling-playing style of another sax legend, Johnny Hodges and both of them performed Strayhorn compositions. The Grumbs Jazz Ensemble will incorporate the Hodges/Coltrane influence as they interpret Strayhorn classics such as Lush Life, Take the “A” Train and Satin Doll...
