The 2018 ALC Jazz Concert features Joe Chambers -- one of the most recorded drummers and accomplished composers of the last five decades, leading M’BOOM Re: Percussion. M’BOOM is a percussion collective, founded in 1970 by the NEA Jazz Master Max Roach. Besides Chambers, M’Boom includes fellow percussionists Bobby Sanabria, Warren I. Smith, Diego Lopez and vocalist Mavis Swan Poole. Supporting M’Boom will be resident, Washington artists: Herman Burney on Double Bass; Brian Settles on Soprano and Tenor Saxophones, and The String Queens with Kendall Isadore (violin), Robin Massie (violin), Dawn Johnson (viola) and Elise Cuffy (cello). The concert will be held on Thursday September 13 th, from 8:00 to 10:30 pm, for the first time at the City Winery, 1350 Oakie St., NE. Doors open at 7:00 pm. The ALC ’18 Jazz Concert is a ticketed event.
During the concert Rep. Jackson Lee will present the ALC’ 18 CBCF Jazz Legacy Awards to Chambers, Sanabria, Smith and Lopez. The 2018 CBCF ALC Jazz Issue Forum is entitled Jazz Preservation, Education and Promulgation: DC Jazz Stories. Aaron Myers and Herb Scott, of the Capitol Hill Jazz Foundation will provide on update on HR 4626: The National Jazz Preservation, Education and Promulgation Act. The ALC ’18 Jazz Issue Forum takes place on Thursday September 13, 2018, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, in Room 103A of the WEWCC.
The 33rd Annual ALC Jazz Issue Forum explores how the central principles of HR 4626 are featured in the newly published book, DC Jazz: Stories of Jazz Music in Washington, D.C. (Georgetown University Press). Panelists include Bridget Arwine, Freelance Writer, Photographer and Founder of Beets and Bebop Media; Anna Harwell Celenza, Thomas Caestecker Professor of Music, Georgetown University; Rusty Hassan, 50 year Jazz Radio Programmer and Jazz History Instructor, University of the District of Columbia; Cedric Hendricks, Executive Producer ALC ‘18 Jazz Issue Forum and Concert; Willard Jenkins, Artistic Director, DC Jazz Festival; Judith Korey, Curator of the University of the district of Columbia’s Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives; and Lauren Sinclair, American University, School of Professional and Extended Studies and violinist with the Howard University Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Maurice Jackson, Co-Editor of DC Jazz, and Professor of History and African-American Studies, Georgetown University, will moderate the panel. The CBCF ALC Jazz Issue Forum is free and open to the public. Since 1985, The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) Jazz Issue Forum and Concert has convened during the Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference for the purpose of celebrating and educating the public about Jazz. The CBCF has utilized performances, awards presentations and panel discussions to showcase various aspects of the jazz experience and vibrancy of the music as a dynamic cultural phenomenon in our society.
