The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – which for close to four decades has combined concepts of African American music making with the roots of traditional African music, to make something new - returns to the DC area for its 15th annual Black History Month performance. Ensemble founder Kahil El’Zabar (drums, voice, kalimba), former President of the famed Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), led the ensemble’s first performance in his hometown of Chicago, in 1973. Nearly 40 years later, this legendary ensemble, which includes multi-reed instrumentalist Ernest Khabeer Dawkins and youthful trumpet titan Corey Wilkes, is still sharing their special brand of 21st century Griot music.
