About

Sakari Kukko, founder of Piirpauke and Finnish world music pioneer, describes his latest band project: "Here's a band introducing brilliant immigrant musicians, who's roots go back to the kingdom of Mali. Their ancestors were top musicians already in the 13th century! Part of the African band members come from the legendary music dynasties Cissokho and Dembele. I have to admit that without my 40 years of dedication it would be impossible to stay in the saddle, riding with these masters! I'd like to compare the band to a Ferrari - you can enjoy the ride without analysing things too much. It just works fantastically, what a joy! Our music is rooted in the above mentioned traditions, but it also includes Finnish traditional music, Sibelius, Kuula, Malmsten etc. The point is to make these seemingly distant traditions harmonise naturally."Afrojazz Club invites persons or organisations, which reflect the club's values to give open mic talks before showtime, with topics such as equality, diversity, the environment and the peace movement. Tonight´s pre-gig talk is given by Thomas Babila Sama, who is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Unit of Social and Public Policy, in the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki, Finland. Dr. Sama is also e.g. a board member of ETMU. The Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration (ETMU) is a multidisciplinary scientific association that promotes research in this field in Finland.
