The Brian Gephart Group will be performing “A Love Supreme” on December 9, 2014, 7:30 pm, at 27 Live in Evanston. This performance will be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the classic recording. Joining Brian will be Bob Long on piano, Mike Arnopol on bass, and Eric Montzka on drums.

In 1964, John Coltrane wrote and recorded “A Love Supreme.” The recording took place on December 9that Rudy Van Gelder’s recording studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. “A Love Supreme” is a 4 part suite: Acknowledgement, Resolution, Pursuance, and Psalm. Alice Coltrane described John Coltrane as he emerged from days of solitude spent writing the piece:
“It was like Moses coming down from the mountain, it was so beautiful. He walked down and there was that joy, there was peace in his face, tranquility. So I said, ‘Tell me everything, we didn’t really see you for four or five days.’ He said, ‘This is the first time that I have received all the music for what I wanted to record, in a suite. This is the first time I have everything, everything ready.”

Brian Gephart performed John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” at the 2014 Monterey Jazz Festival this past September with the J. Hanrahan Quartet.
