Berkowitz, Graml, and Stiles are a creative new jazz trio on the Washington, D.C. scene who play original compositions and contemporary arrangements of lesser-known jazz standards. Firmly and respectfully rooted in the traditions of jazz music, the trio aims to explore modern musical concepts while also paying homage to the masters and innovators of this uniquely American artform. The trio is made up of drummer Julian Berkowitz, bassist Gerhard Graml, and pianist Chris Stiles.
Julian Berkowitz is originally from the small town of Easton, Connecticut and moved to the District in 2013 to attend The George Washington University. Since graduating in 2017, Julian has quickly been making a name for himself as a drummer. He has actively been performing at a number of well-known jazz venues in the DMV, such as Blues Alley, Alice’s Jazz and Cultural Society, Jojo, An Die Musik Live, Rams Head on Stage, and 49 West. Gerhard Graml is a versatile bassist, composer and teacher living in Washington, D.C. who studied at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna, Austria and graduated in 1992 with a degree in Jazz Bass and Music Education. Since then he has worked in various musical settings, such as writing film scores and contributing to several CD-productions and TV- & Radio specials. Gerhard has toured Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia. He has recorded and performed with such diverse artists as beat poet Ruth Weiss, the contemporary music ensemble die reihe, Jazz artists Don Preston, Gary Wittner, Herb Pomeroy, Brad Terry, Conchita & many others. He hosted a jazz radio show on the Austrian Broadcasting Network ORF and is currently teaching at the German International School Washington, D.C.
Chris Stiles is an international musician with over 20 years of experience performing in the US and Asia. Originally from Phoenix, AZ, he arrived on the Washington, D.C. music scene in early 2018 and has quickly become a valued member of the musical community. Through the years, he has had the privilege of performing with a number of renown artists, including the legendary R&B group The Temptations. In addition to performing in the United States, Chris also lived and performed in Asia for over 10 years. He co-founded and wrote music for the Dragon Jazz Quartet, which toured and performed regularly across China, including the capital city of Beijing. Also during his time in Asia, he had the pleasure of performing to packed stadiums in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore as a band member for some of Asia’s biggest stars, such as five-time MTV Asia Award winner Stefanie Sun and acclaimed actress and singer Karen Mok. Chris studied music at Arizona State University with virtuoso jazz pianist and professor Chuck Marohnic, as well as award-winning Chicago pianist Michael Kocour.
