The NYU Jazz Orchestra, is an 18-piece big band, is the premier performing jazz ensemble at New York University featuring talented jazz musicians from around the world. With NYU Jazz Studies located in the heart of Greenwich Village, New York City, the group performs regularly at legendary jazz clubs and venues around New York City and has toured across Europe, South America and as far East as Abu Dhabi. A wide variety of jazz artists have been featured with the ensemble over the past few years including Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz, Chris Potter, Lenny Pickett, Randy Brecker, Alex Sipiagin, Wayne Krantz, to name a few. Combo Nuvo
The brainchild of Dave Schroeder and Rich Shemaria, Combo Nuvo was created to explore the diversity of musical experiences each member brought to the group. Their premise was simple; let's combine our favorite music with our favorite musicians and see what happens. In addition, they brought unique instruments from around the world into the group, finding new ways to write and arrange for them. Playing in tiny bistros and coffee houses around the Village during the late 90's, the group began to find their sound. Their unique blend was created using instruments like the chromatic harmonica & blues harp, acoustic guitar, cello, Middle Eastern percussion, piano & synthesizers, jaw harp, penny whistle, flutes, clarinets and saxophones.
By 2003, Schroeder accepted the position as Director of Jazz Studies at NYU Steinhardt and appointed Combo Nuvo the NYU Jazz Artist-in-Residence Ensemble, giving the group a forum to showcase their talents on an international level. From their humble beginnings, Combo Nuvo has moved on to perform at iconic venues like the Blue Note Jazz Club, Birdland and Dizzy's Club Coca Cola in New York City. Around the globe they've appeared with international orchestras such as the Costa Rica Sinfonica Nacional, Peru National Symphony (Lima), the United Arab Emirates Philharmonic in Abu Dhabi, the i Solisti dell Orchestra del Teatro Verdi (Florence, Italy) and the Morin Khuur Ensemble; the National Symphony of Mongolia. In 2010, Combo Nuvo performed before 100,000 people (broadcast to over a billion) at the 60th Gala Celebration for East China Normal University in Shanghai, China.
Tom Scott
As a "first-call" L.A. session musician since the 70s, saxophonist/composer Tom Scott has dozens of solo recordings for which he collected thirteen Grammy nominations (three of which he won). He also has numerous film and television scoring credits, including composing and conducting the score for the movie Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and appeared on records by such diverse artists as George Harrison, the Beach Boys, the Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, Steppenwolf, Rod Stewart, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Joni Mitchell, Blondie, Eddie Money, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Quincy Jones, Carole King, Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton-John and Frank Sinatra, to name a few. Scott was a founding member of the Blues Brothers Band, despite his absence in the two films.
Scott's best-known works are the theme songs for TV series Starsky and Hutch and The Streets of San Francisco along with movies and his soprano sax solo and fills on the 1975 No. 1 hit single "Listen to What the Man Said" for Wings. In 1976 he played the theme I Still Can't Sleep in Taxi driver.
Rich Shemaria
Composer, arranger, pianist, conductor Rich Shemaria grow up in Southern California during the 1960s and 70s. Moving to New York City in 1985, he entered the jazz scene by forming his own big band, the Rich Shemaria Jazz Orchestra. From 1990-91 he participated in one of the first BMI Composers Workshops under the direction of Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Albam. From 1994-96 Rich moved to Helsinki serving as musical director for the UMO Jazz Orchestra, the national radio big band of Finland. While with UMO, he toured with Natalie Cole and conducted performances with artists including; Michael Brecker, Mercer Ellington, Roy Hargrove, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marvin Stamm, Steve Turre, Houston Person, Randy Johnston and Nicholas Payton. A prolific composer and arranger, Rich has received commissions from noted jazz groups including UMO, The Airmen of Note. Additionally, Rich has arranged music for Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Chris Potter, Lenny Pickett, Brian Lynch, Richard Bona, and Teo Macero. A member of the NYU Jazz Faculty since 2003, Rich teaches composition and arranging as well as conducts the NYU Jazz Orchestra. He is also a founding member of the eclectic jazz group Combo Nuvo.
