There can be no question that one of the most innovative and skilled musician/composers on the international music scene is guitarist, David Occhipinti. Eclectic, complex and stunning are three adjectives that can easily be applied to the music of this exceptional artist. On December 7th, Occhipinti will be releasing his latest recording project (and his fifth CD as a leader), Camera. This new independent CD release is best described as "contemporary chamber music composition combined with jazz improvisation" and features performances by Max Christie on clarinet, Steven Dann on viola, Andrew Downing on bass, Amanda Goodbum and Aline Homzy on violin, David Hetherington on cello, Beverley Johnston on marimba/percussion and Nadine Mackie-Jackson on bassoon.
The release of David Occhipinti's Camera will take place on Friday, December 7th at 7:30 PM at Heliconian Hall, located at 35 Hazelton Ave. (in the Yorkville are of Toronto). Tickets are available at the door, and ticket prices are $15.00 - which includes a CD. Regular admission is $10.00. CD copies of Camera will be on sale for $10.00 at the launch event.
Percussionist Beverley Johnston has described David's progressive, genre-bending music on this new project as "Frank Zappa meets Igor Stravinsky" - and there can be no doubt that Occhipinti's work is challenging, beautifully crafted and artistically performed. All compositions on Camera are written and arranged by David Occhipinti, and include the five-part "BANFF SUITE", written for guitar, clarinet, bassoon, marimba, violin, cello and bass. The innovative work is comprised of movements entitled "Nimbus", "Morning Rundle", "Borgeau", "Summit" and "Cirrus". Also included on the recording is the profound, seven movement suite, "METAMORPHOSUITE", written for guitar and string quartet and comprised of movements entitled "Spark", "Interlude #1", "Gypsy Viola", "Ricordo", "Transition", "Interlude #2" and "Chrysalis". Other pieces include "Fortuna Major" and "Geometric Forms".
On this new recording, David Occhipinti wishes to pay homage to his mentor, iconic jazz guitarist Jim Hall by giving him a special thanks for 'opening doors'. The Jim Hall CD Textures was a huge influence on David and the making of Camera.
