A meeting between differet musical traditions and genresEtnolab is a musical laboratory where the lines between tradition and genres blur. Once the floodgates open, Bulgarian musical tradition pours out from one side while jazz, rock, and improv pour from the other.These strongly reactive musical elements are combined inside the tubes and flasks of the lab, and the music is reborn as a previously-unknown substance, which the four musical scientists observe and present on stage.Leading this lab team is Johan Toftegaard Knudsen, who has studied Bulgarian folk music and uses his collected insights to transform the familiar jazz paradigm. This has resulted in new compositions, which speak their own language, as well as hybrid reimaginations of Bulgarian tradition.Etnolab has performed successful shows at Aarhus Jazz Festival in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Et møde mellem forskellige musikalske traditioner og genrerEtnolab er et musikalsk laboratorium, hvor grænser mellem traditioner og genrer opløses, når sluserne lukkes op, og bulgarsk musiktradition flyder fra den ene hane, og jazz, rock og improvisation flyder fra den anden.Disse stærkt reaktive musikalske grundstoffer løber sammen i laboratoriets rør og kolber, og musikken genfødes i et ikke tidligere kendt reaktionsprodukt, som de fire musiklaboranter iagttager og går ud og giver nyt liv på scenen.I spidsen for laborant-teamet står Johan Toftegaard Knudsen, som i flere år har studeret den bulgarske folkemusik og anvendt den vundne indsigt til at transformere det jazzparadigme, han selv er vokset op med. Det har resulteret i nye kompositioner, som taler deres helt eget sprog, og hybride genfortolkninger af den bulgarske tradition.Etnolab har med stor succes givet koncerter på blandt andet Aarhus Jazz Festival i 2015, 2016 og 2017. I 2017 udgav orkesteret albummet The Science of Meetings.Etnolab har en speciel gæst med, Orhan Özgür, prisvindende stortalent inden for tyrkisk musik, på bağlama, oud og vokal.
