Albert âTootieâ Heath has a long-standing relationship with Denmark as he was among the numerous American jazz expats who settled here in the 1960s, playing here regularly with musicians such as Don Cherry, Kenny Drew, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Niels-Henning Ărsted Pedersen. His tenure back then as the house drummer of Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen was later celebrated in the acclaimed 2005 documentary feature film âBetween a Smile and a Tearâ written and directed by Niels Lan Doky. The National Endowment for the Arts awarded Albert âTootieâ Heath a 2021 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship - the highest honor in jazz from the US government. Previous recipients have included Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollins and Wayne Shorter among others.
