Jazz aficionados take note! The Baltimore Jazz Alliance will highlight the City’s rich and varied jazz scene during its second “Baltimore Jazz Composers’ Showcase”, a unique event which will premiere four brand new compositions from top area jazz artists, on Sunday, September 29, 2013, at Loyola University. According to BJA President Mark Osteen, the Showcase is the first competition of its kind in Baltimore history. The new works, along with an additional six compositions, will be performed by the Baltimore Jazz Alliance Quintet, led by Anthony Villa of Loyola University. The Showcase is made possible with the support of Loyola’s Center for the Humanities and the William G. Baker, Jr., Memorial Fund, creator of the Baker Artist Awards. The Baltimore Jazz Alliance Quintet, directed by Anthony Villa, DMA, a professor at Loyola University Maryland, will perform new compositions by commission winners Ethan Helm, Ian Sims, Todd Butler and Nico Sarbanes (student winner). In addition, six other composers will be featured on the program: Tim Andrulonis, Bill Murray, Mark Osteen, Phil Ravita, Brian Smith, and George Spicka.

Founded in 2003, The Baltimore Jazz Alliance is a grass-roots organization of jazz aficionados, musicians and venues dedicated to enhancing and promoting jazz in Baltimore and the surrounding areas. The Alliance aims to develop new audiences for jazz, strengthen communication within the Baltimore jazz community, bring greater visibility to the entire array of jazz offerings in the Baltimore region, and to provide greater access to performance opportunities for Baltimore area jazz musicians.
