The Fidel Morales Afro Cuban Jazz Trio will be performing for the first time in St. Louis. The group is known for their virtuosity, dynamic and rhythmically intricate performances.

The band’s leader, Fidel Morales is a drummer & percussionist from Havana, Cuba now based in Puerto Rico where he teaches drum set at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Morales is a professor at the Jazz and Caribbean Music Area of the Conservatory. He has performed with artists such as Danilo Pérez, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Giovanni Hidalgo, Eddie Gómez, John Faddis, Mark Kramer, Mike Orta, Gary Campbell, Gary Keller and Vic Juris. He contributed as well in the CD “Bajando Gervasio”, by Amadito Valdés, nominated for 2004 GRAMMY Awards. Morales is preparing for the release of his 3rd album “Omío”....

The Fidel Morales Afro Cuban Jazz Trio will be performing for the first time in St. Louis. The group is known for their virtuosity, dynamic and rhythmically intricate performances.

The band’s leader, Fidel Morales is a drummer & percussionist from Havana, Cuba now based in Puerto Rico where he teaches drum set at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Morales is a professor at the Jazz and Caribbean Music Area of the Conservatory. Morales is joined by Gabriel Rodriguez, from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Rodriguez has 3 record releases under his name and 2 Grammy nominated projects as a member of Charlie Sepulveda’s group. He is also the jazz bass professor also at the Conservatory. The 3rd member of this group is Dr. Isaac Lausell who teaches jazz and classical guitar at the School of Music in SIUC. Dr. Lausell has led the guitar program since 2012 and will soon be releasing his 3rd CD “Homegrown Devices”.

On January 24th the trio will be performing at VOCE, a live music venue located at 212 S. Tucker Blvd., St Louis, MO, 63103. The group will play 2 sets from 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm. Admission is $10.00 and $5.00 for students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at [email protected].

The group has two initial presentations in Illinois. On January 23nd the trio Fidel Morales will be teaching a master class on Afro-Cuban Music and Jazz at Altgeld Hall, room 117. This is a rare opportunity for the students and community to learn directly from one of the pioneers of the modern Cuban popular music better known as “Timba”.

Also on January 23rd at 7:30 the trio will present a concert at the auditorium in Quigley Hall located at 410 Quigley Hall, 875 S. Normal Avenue Carbondale, IL 62901-4303. The repertoire will feature mostly original pieces by Morales as well as arrangements of time favored jazz classics. Admission is $6.00 for the general audience and free for the students and staff SIUC’s School of Music. For more info call 618-536-8742.
