Harmonia Jazz Workshop: Soso Lakatos Quartet at Budapest Jazz Club

SÁNDOR „SOSO” LAKATOS, the youngest offspring of a great Roma musical dynasty is an incredibly gifted alto- and tenor-saxophonist. He has been playing professionally since the age of 12. At 16 he was the star soloist of the Hungarian teenage band, the Next Generation that came third in Spain at the Getxo International Jazz Festival in 2003. The Next Generation also played and brought down the house at The Spitz in London. Having made his mark on the Hungarian jazz scene before the age of 20, he went to Holland to further his studies where he was tutored by the world’s leading jazzmen, like Miguel Zenon, Branford Marsalis, Gerard Presencer and Brad Mehldau, just to name a few. He played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Russia and the Ukraine. In 2012 he won the Keep An Eye International Jazz Award for best composition. He is back in Hungary now leading his own quartet and with his brilliant, intelligent, inventive playing he is in great demand by the top bands in the country. He will be accompanied by BÉLA SZAKCSI LAKATOS Jr., a brilliant bop pianist with amazing verve and great powers of invention in a genre where surprises don’t come easy.
Béla Jr. gave ample proof on the album, Szakcsi Generation with Jack DeJohnette and John Patitucci of just how consistently he maintains the standards set by his amazing father, not to mention the fact that he also turned out to be an equal partner to his world-famous American accompanists. Béla is also an amazing teacher and a relentless searcher for new talent.
On bass we'll have a most amazingly talented offspring of another legendary musical family, who won the National Jazz Bass Competition at the age of 13 and hasn’t looked back since: KRISZTIÁN PECEK LAKATOS. The drummer ELEMER BALÁZS, - according to many, the best on his instrument in Hungary, and is also the leader of one of the most popular bands in the country.
