Helios Jazz Orchestra at SPC Jazz Festival

The fourth annual SPC Jazz Festival includes 3 concerts and 1 workshop. Friday, 1/27 features singer Kathy Kosins with the Helios Jazz Orchestra.

Kathy Kosins was and raised during the Motown era of Detroit, she began singing and arranging background vocals for producer Don Was in the early eighties. As a lead vocalist she recorded for both Carrere (Sony) and Quality Records and later toured with Was/Not Was.

In the early ‘90s, Kathy fell in love with the freedom of the jazz. Kathy has shared the stage and performed with numerous names in the jazz and R&B world including Cyrus Chestnut, Randy Brecker, Javon Jackson, James Moody, Kevin Mahogany, Greg Hutchinson, Red Holloway, Grant Green Jr., Eric Marienthal, Mitch Ryder, Michael Henderson and others. Her latest projects include “Rhapsody in Boop” -featuring the music of Betty Boop and “The Ladies of Cool”, singing in the styles of Julie London, Anita O’Day, June Christy and Chris Connor....

The Helios Jazz Orchestra was formed in late 2008 as ensemble-in-residence at St. Petersburg College and is directed by SPC professor David Manson. Helios has been active performing at the Clearwater Jazz Festival, Palladium Theater, Ybor Jazz Festival, WMNF Jazz Jam, the Salvador Dali Museum, SPC Jazz Festival and other events.
