From the ruins left by the 2013 breakup of Staff Benda Bilili, who also sold out Hulvila Festival Tent when they played in Finland, rises Mbongwana Star, a group that steers clear of easy compartmentalization and disrupts the clichés of African music. The rhythmic evening is started off with Kari Ikonen’s latest group, the Trio Toffa, which features a fusion of afro-pop-jazz.

Vuonna 2013 hajonneen, Huvilankin loppuunmyyneen Staff Benda Bililin raunioille noussut Mbongwana Star karttaa helppoja lokerointeja ja ravistelee kliseitä afrikkalaisesta musiikista. Yakala ‘Coco’ Ngambali, Nsituvuidi ‘Theo’ Nzonza ja tuottaja Liam Farrell ovat rakentaneet paikallisesta rumbasta ja soukousista ammentavan äänikoneen, joka sykkii raa’an minimalistisella urbaanilla energialla.
Kari Ikosen tuore kokoonpano Trio Toffa aloittaa illan sykettä kohottavalla afro-pop-jazz-fuusiollaan.
