NJW kicks off the seventh season of its popular jazz performance and education series, Jazz on the Move with a tribute to the great American composer Jimmy Van Heusen on the centennial of his birth. The program, "Come Fly With Us: 100 Years of Jimmy Van Heusen," will take place Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 3pm at Collins Auditorium on the campus of Lipscomb University. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Jazz on the Move is a lecture and performance series highlighting major figures and periods in jazz history. Presented by Nashville’s top jazz artist/educators, the series offers audiences world class music as well as an opportunity to learn more about jazz.

Jimmy Van Heusen (1913-1990) was one of the most prolific songwriters in American History. He wrote songs for films, television, and theater, and won an Emmy and four Academy Awards. Although his name is not a household word, songs such as "Swinging on a Star," "Call Me Irresponsible," and "High Hopes" are instantly recognizable as popular standards. He is also revered in the jazz world for compositions such as "Here's That Rainy Day," "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," and "Like Someone in Love." He is most identified with Frank Sinatra, for whom he wrote 85 songs. Most of his compositions were written with lyricist partners Johnny Burke (1940 to 1953) and Sammy Cahn. His string of hits began in 1939 with "Darn That Dream" and continued through the 1970's.

The January 20 event will feature performances of some of Van Heusen's best-loved songs by the Lori Mechem Trio with guests Denis Solee (saxophone) and vocalists Jeff Hall and Liz Johnson. Tying the music together will be a biography of Van Heusen written by Ken Roberts and narrated by Don O. Henry. Also in attendance will be members of Van Heusen's family, who are based in Nashville and operate Van Heusen Music, which oversees the catalog of all of Van Heusen's works. The event is made possible through generous support from The Frist Foundation, Lipscomb University, and Van Heusen Music.
