Working with members of The Frankie Manning Foundation, “Jazzmobile Celebrates Frankie Manning’s 100th: Lindy Hopping at the Savoy.” March 12, 1926, on Lenox Avenue in Harlem, The Savoy Ballroom opened its doors. Billed as the “World’s finest ballroom” it had the distinction as being the first racially integrated public places in America. Nicknamed, “The home of happy feet” and dancer Frankie Manning! People from all walks of life went there to dance or to learn the newest steps. The best bands were featured there. Even Teddy Hill, of Minton’s Playhouse fame, for some time, led the house band. One of the most famous nights was the battle of the Chick Webb band against Benny Goodman’s band. Of the many dance crazes emanating from The Savoy Ballroom perhaps The Lindy Hop was the one that captured the heart and the soul of the Country as “THE” dance created at the Savoy until its 1958 close. Many dancers hoofed and swung there but the name Frankie Manning has become synonymous with Lindy Hoping and the Savoy. He revolutionized the course of the Lindy Hop with his innovations, including the lindy “air step” and synchronized ensemble lindy routine.
