Joel Harrison and Mother Stump at Brooks Hall

On Sunday November 15th at 7:30 pm in UVA’s Brooks Hall, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU welcome guitarist and composer Joel Harrison back to Charlottesville.
Named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2010, Washington D.C. native Joel Harrison has long been recognized as a highly gifted guitarist, composer, arranger, vocalist and songwriter. He has released nearly 20 cds since 1995 as a leader. Possessed of a restless musical spirit, Harrison’s most recent recordings include 2015’s Spirit House (a quintet featuring trumpet and bassoon), and 2014’s Mother Stump, a power trio disc. In Mother Stump, the project he’s bringing to town this time, Harrison puts himself out front, leading a trio that catalyzes numerous American guitar styles in a stunning display of raw sound and emotion that spans not only jazz but blues, rock and spirituals. Featured are bassist Stephan Crump (also a member of Vijay Iyer’s award winning trio), drummer Jeremy Clemons. Their repertoire ranges from originals to covers such as the traditional John the Revelator, Paul Motian’s Folk Song For Rosie, and Leonard Cohen’s Suzanne.
Tickets to Joel Harrison and Mother Stump at UVA’s Brooks Hall on Sunday November 15th at 7:30 pm are available in advance at Eventbrite.com. $15 general admission, $12 for paid supporters of The Charlottesville Jazz Society, and $10 for all students.
