John Pizzarelli may be a world-renowned guitarist and singer, but he is a Jersey guy through and through. Born in Paterson and raised in Bergen County, he comes from a musical family. His father, Bucky Pizzarelli, is one of the most beloved jazz guitarists of all time, brother Martin is a popular jazz bassist, and sister Mary played professionally before turning to a career in business.

While John is best known as of one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook, he has expanded that repertoire to include the music of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon-McCartney. His latest album, Midnight McCartney, was recorded at the request of Paul McCartney, a big fan, who asked him to interpret some of his songs in a jazz style.

John Pizzarelli is quick to tell people that no matter what he is singing or playing, his hero and the foundation for his approach to music is the great Nat “King” Cole, to whom he has devoted two albums and to whom he owes the configuration of his latest piano, bass, and drums quartet. It has been said that John carries on Cole’s tradition of soft crooning, impeccable musicianship and a love a swing unlike anyone else in jazz today.
