Pelham, NY - Spottiswoode, the English frontman of Spottiswoode & His Enemies - the NYC-based cult band that recently celebrated its 15th anniversary by winning two Independent Music Awards for their last release Wild Goosechase Expedition - will make his debut acoustic performance on The Stage at Rockwells in Pelham, NY on Friday September 27, 2013 at 8:30 p.m.
Spott will be joined by two of his Enemies, John Young on bass and Kevin Cordt on trumpet. "It's the first time I've ever played with either of them in a stripped down trio format," says the Englishman. "It will be a full scale war of attrition. I wonder who'll win? John's fingers, my vocal chords or Kevin's lips? What a great way to start off the fall season of shows."

SPOTTISWOODE & HIS ENEMIES (BIO)
Referred to as a "genius" by The New Yorker, Spottiswoode is the son of an American singer and an English clergyman. WNYC's John Schaefer describes him as "one of New York's more colorful band leaders for more than a decade." For the past fifteen years, the Englishman has been the frontman of Spottiswoode & His Enemies, a septet that has become a New York institution. With the band, Spottiswoode has released five acclaimed CDs and toured worldwide from SXSW and Lille Europe to Lincoln Center. They have been profiled on NPR's Weekend Edition and featured on nationally syndicated radio programs such as XM Loft and World Cafe with David Dye.
Spottiswoode's songs have been covered by numerous artists and featured in a variety of television shows and films (She's Out Of My League, The Ledge, Tart, Bridget), as well as in his own short film, The Gentleman, which he wrote, directed and scored, and which played for several years on the Independent Film Channel. His gothic rock opera, Above Hell's Kitchen, was presented to sold-out crowds at the prestigious New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2010.
In 2012, Spottiswoode & His Enemies won 2 Independent Music Awards for their fifth record, Wild Goosechase Expedition, a critically hailed "miracle" (popdose) about a rock band's doomed wartime tour. Awards included Best Adult Contemporary Song (for the piano ballad, Chariot) and the Vox Populi Award for Best Eclectic Album. Ironically,Spottiswoode has always bristled at that particular description of the band's music. "We are expressionists!" he pleads. Yes, his songs travel the gamut from raw rock and roll anthems, confessional jazz ballads and gospelinflected hymns to vaudevillian ditties. Yes, he has drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Ray Davies, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. And yes, His Enemies are comfortable in a multitude of musical genres and always happy to switch gears and instruments. WXPN's Dan Reed concurs: "They do something that few bands can do: evoke real emotions, sometimes several different ones in a single song." Paste Magazine describes the live show as "nothing short of transportive!"
