Archivist, actor and writer Chris Haley will give a presentation on indentured servitude and slavery in Maryland from its implementation for the early settlers to the abolition of slavery with the passage of Maryland’s 1864 state constitution. Haley’s talk will include information about Matthias de Sousa, the original settler abolitionist aboard the Arc and the Dove who rose from indentured servitude to become a member of the Maryland General Assembly, as well as the ways indentured servitude and slavery affected the lives of Black adults and their children both during and after 1864. *Image shows Matthias de Sousa from the mural at the St...
