About us: Innocence Project New Orleans (IPNO) represents innocent prisoners serving life sentences in Louisiana and south Mississippi, and assists them with their transition into the free world upon their release.
IPNO has won the freedom or exoneration of 21 wrongly convicted prisoners.
These men served a total of 420 years in prison for crimes they did not commit - Allen Coco, Jimmy Bass, Phillip Bivens, Dan Bright, Greg Bright, Dennis Brown, Calvin Duncan, Glenn Davis, Larry Delmore, Bobby Ray Dixon, Travis Hayes, Henry James, Anthony Johnson, Arthur Johnson, Dwight Labran, Terrence Myers, Earl Truvia, Larry Ruffin (died in prison before exoneration), Leroy White, Michael Williams and Cedric Willis.
In the two states with the highest incarceration rates in the world, IPNO frees innocent prisoners, exposes injustice and prevents wrongful convictions. IPNO uses its cases to explain how wrongful convictions happen and what we can all do to prevent them. IPNO works with legislators, judges, lawyers, law enforcement and policymakers to protect the innocent within the criminal justice system.
IPNO was set up to take on some of the hardest innocence cases, those that can’t be solved with a quick DNA test but that require hundreds of hours of investigation, something no life-sentenced prisoner can afford. We’re the only office in Louisiana dedicated to exonerating factually innocent inmates with life sentences—AT NO COST TO THEM OR THEIR FAMILIES.
