Grammy award winning Jazz and R&B vocalist Nancy Wilson passed away last year on December 13th. This Tribute will highlight some of her greatest hits and bring an awareness to her broad appeal and musical influence. From 1996 through 2005 Wilson was the host of NPR’s Jazz Profiles, a documentary series that profiled the legends and legacy of jazz. TV viewers may recall her 1974-75 NBC variety series, "The Nancy Wilson Show," for which she won an Emmy. She was frequently a guest on "The Cosby Show" and dramatic series’ like "The F.B.I." and “Hawaii 5-O.” In 1998, she received the NAACP Image award — having been active in the civil rights movement. The Nancy Wilson Tribute band is led by Portland area vocalists Alyssa Schwary and Anandi Gefroh. Alyssa has sung in 28 countries and in all 50 of the United States under various private and corporate sponsorships. As an independent artist, singer/songwriter and bandleader, she sold over 3,000 copies of her first CD release in 1993 "Another Chance". This album was voted one of the 10 best in Seattle in 1994, by Earshot Jazz Magazine. Virgin Atlantic used "Another Chance", for their in-flight entertainment programming. Schwary has opened, recorded or performed with Tito Puente, Gino Vanelli, Kenny Barron, The Yellow Jackets, and the Oregon Symphony. Anandi began her career as a singer-songwriter, recording three albums of original songs. Her funk-rock tune “Enough of You” has received more than 3 million hits on YouTube and other songs have been used on television spots and in commercials. In the early 2000’s Anandi turned from the Americana style to jazz. Anandi has established a strong following in Portland, appearing at the Rose Festival, the PDX Jazz Festival, Jimmy Maks, and producing her bi-annual concert at Classic Pianos. Jazz fans delight in Anandi’s full spectrum repertoire. Critic George Fendel of the Oregon Jazz Society says Anandi is “"...a no nonsense, real deal jazz singer." More at www.anandi.com
