The National Youth Jazz Orchestra will take to The Lamproom stage in July under the direction of MD Mark Armstrong to bring the best of British Big Band Jazz to Barnsley.

NYJO is a glittering showcase for the UK’s finest young professional jazz musicians, combining a hard-swinging rhythm section and a raft of hugely talented soloists. Performing around 40 concerts a year both nationally and internationally, NYJO has helped launch the careers of many of the country’s most renowned jazz musicians including Guy Barker, Amy Winehouse, Mark Nightingale and Laura Jurd.

Our ‘Bebop and Beyond’ programme takes you on a jazz journey. From the ground-breaking sounds of Dizzy Gillespie’s bebop big band which transformed jazz from dance music to an entertaining art form in its own right, through the great jazz legends who developed the jazz sound we know and love today, including Thad Jones, Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson. Expect electric sounds and impressive improvisations as we explore the world of bebop, and beyond!
