In every possible key ‘liberation’ is the motto of Patricio Wang (Chile, 1952). He calls himself “refugee in twofold” who via music gained his own freedom. Starting composition at the conservatory of the University of Chili in Santiago (1968) amid a turbulent period of liberation movements in Latin America, Wang fused Andean music with classical European and pop, including nueva canción and adaptations of Beatles songs. “Subversive music” that turned him into a persona non grata in the wake of the eleventh of September 1973. Forced to flee, at The Hague Conservatory Wang emerges both as a prominent student of Louis Andriessen and a productive composer/guitarist in avantgarde ensembles (ASKO, De Volharding, Hoketus) and Andean formations (Amankay, Quilapayùn). His edgy synthesis of academic and popular music is expressed in countless compositions for film, dance and music theatre.
Five decades of engagement is the keynote of this concert with which Wang has been promoting his motto of musical liberation. Accompanied with texts by the prominent writer Marja Vuijsje they tell a moving musical tale of resistance and liberation.
