The show features New York based trumpeter Satish Robertson giving a fresh take on jazz standards and modern day pop hits with his quintet the Satish Robertson SoundzScape.
Harlem based trumpeter Satish Robertson boasts a sensitive yet commanding approach to his instrument. He possesses a robust tone that can veer dramatically from a Herculean bellow to an intimate whisper that tugs at the heart. Add to this a riveting melodic sense, a penchant for harmonic and rhythmic exploration, and an infectious stage presence, and it becomes little wonder why Satish’s sound has been spreading like wildfire, on stage and on record, across genres ranging from jazz to house to hiphop to rock.
A dyed in the wool hard bopping improviser at heart, Satish’s style has been compared to Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, and Woody Shaw. Robertson also cites Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Roy Hargrove, and Maurice Brown as influences. He has played extensively with Spirit Of Life Ensemble, alongside the late trumpet legend Ted Curson, as well as with Mike Longo’s State Of The Art Jazz Orchestra, Jason “Malletman” Taylor, James Zollar, Donald Smith, and Onaje Allan Gumbs, just to name a few.
Robertson grew up in a Jersey City household steeped in a myriad of sounds from his grandmother’s record collection. He began piano lessons at age 7 during which time he discovered he had perfect pitch, picking up nearly any bit of music by ear. By age 20, Satish was so moved by the music of Miles Davis that he picked up the trumpet. After purchasing his first horn from a pawn shop, Satish sought out to learn from the best. This led to private studies with Rob Henke, Vinnie Cutro, Ted Curson, Ryo Sasaki, and Malcolm Ballinger, as well as with Jeremy Pelt through the Jazzmobile program. Although proud to have been awarded a scholarship at the New School of Jazz And Contemporary Music, Satish chose to forgo that in order to concentrate on full time fatherhood, nurturing his beautiful daughter and his blossoming career.
Satish continues to chart his musical course across a broad stylistic spectrum. In addition to his ongoing work with Spirit Of Life Ensemble, he can be heard with The Nevermind Orchestra, The Emily Wolf Project, and is also leading his own exhilarating group The Satish Robertson SoundzScape.
