Mitch Watkins grew up in McAllen, Texas. At 13 he played with a surf band then toured with a rock band before completing four years at the University of Texas. He studied choral conducting; he studied composition and jazz guitar. As a young man he played jazz fusion with German organist, Barbara Dennerlein. He played lead guitar for Leonard Cohen! Then he played with Joe Ely, K.T. Oslin, Lyle Lovett, Jerry Jeff Walker and was nominated for a Grammy for his production work with Abra Moore. He taught at the University of Texas.
