– Bringing together the gamba and a big band is a courageous thing for UMO to do. As far as I can tell, it hasn’t been tried before. I haven’t heard of anyone trying to combine early music with big band sounds before. I think it’s great that these worlds are finally meeting and the fact that it’s happening over Easter makes it that much more special. The concert offers everyone a whole new perspective on two important aspects of Easter: death and mercy, Perkola says.
The concert’s sound engineer Tuomas Norvio plays a more prominent role than usual – he is almost like another featured musician. Kari Heinilä will conduct the orchestra.
Viola da gamba is a six-string bowed instrument developed in the 15th century and retained its popularity right up to the late-1700s. The gamba was a prominent instrument in the French court before the revolution, after which most musical activity took place in concert halls. Johann Sebastian Bach, just to name one composer, wrote three sonatas for gamba. The instrument is played between the knees, either using a bow or plucking with fingers. It looks like a violin or cello, but really the guitar is a closer relative and the standup bass is the modern version of the bass gamba. Musicians who play early music have sparked a small-scale gamba renaissance in the classical world.
UMOn perinteisessä pitkäperjantain Silent Music -konsertissa Mikael Agricolan kirkossa kuullaan harvinaislaatuista yhdistelmää, kun perinteinen big band -sointi saa rinnalleen viola da gamban täyteläisen äänen. Laulaja, gambansoittaja, säveltäjä Mikko Perkola on koonnut pitkäperjantain tunnelmaan sopivan kokonaisuuden, johon hän on sekä säveltänyt UMOlle täysin uusia kappaleita, että sovittanut keväällä julkaistavalta pienyhtyeensä Epitafi-levyltä materiaalia isolle, 16-miehiselle kokoonpanolle. Kappaleet on sävelletty mm. Aila Meriluodon ja Pablo Nerudan runoihin sekä Perkolan omiin teksteihin. Konsertissa kuullaan myös Eeva-Liisa Mannerin runoja sekä vanhaa musiikkia 1600-luvulta.
– Tämä yhteenliittymä on rohkea veto UMOlta, sillä omien tutkimusteni mukaan gambaa tai ylipäätään vanhaa musiikkia ei ole yhdistetty big band -musiikkiin koskaan aiemmin. On upeaa, että nämä maailmat kohtaavat ja nimenomaan pääsiäisenä. Konsertissa voi jokainen saada aivan uudenlaisen näkökulman koko pääsiäisen vahvaan teemaan: kuolemaan ja armoon, Perkola kommentoi. Konsertin äänimies Tuomas Norviolla on tavallista suurempi rooli konsertissa; hänen miksauksensa toimii ikään kuin vierailevan muusikon roolissa. Orkesteria johtaa kapellimestari Kari Heinilä. Viola da gamba on kuusikielinen jousisoitin, joka kehitettiin jo 1400-luvulla ja oli suosittu soitin aina 1700-luvun lopulle asti. Gambaa soitettiin erityisesti Ranskan hovissa aina vallankumoukseen asti, jolloin musiikkiesitykset siirtyivät hoveista konserttisaleihin. Muun muassa Johann Sebastian Bach sävelsi kolme gambasonaattia. Gambaa soitetaan polvien välissä joko jousella tai näppäillen. Se muistuttaa ulkonäöltään viulua ja selloa, mutta on lähempää sukua kitaralle, kun taas kontrabasso on bassogamban moderni jälkeläinen. Nyttemmin vanhan musiikin esittäjät ovat elvyttäneet gambansoittoa.
