Steve Potts, born in Columbus (Ohio) in 1943, began playing music as a child, inspired by his cousin Buddy Tate, a saxophonist with Count Basie. After a spell in Los Angeles, where he studied with Charles Lloyd, he landed in New York, rubbing shoulders with the giants of jazz - Dolphy, Coltrane, Carter, Hancock - and playing with such greats as Roy Ayers and Chico Hamilton.In 1970, tired of the hustle and bustle of New York, he moved to Paris. There he began a long musical adventure with Steve Lacy, touring for 23 years and releasing over 25 albums.In the 2000s, he hosted the Parisian scene at the club Les Sept Lézards with three house bands and set up an improvisation workshop, the Ménilmontant Street Band. Always on the road, notably in Italy, he is now preparing a new project, true to his credo: staying intensely alive....

Steve Potts, né en 1943 à Columbus (Ohio), plonge dans la musique dès l’enfance, inspiré par son cousin Buddy Tate, saxophoniste chez Count Basie. Après un passage à Los Angeles où il étudie avec Charles Lloyd, il débarque à New York, côtoie les géants du jazz – Dolphy, Coltrane, Carter, Hancock – et joue avec des pointures comme Roy Ayers et Chico Hamilton.En 1970, lassé du tumulte new-yorkais, il s’installe à Paris. Là, il multiplie les collaborations (Dexter Gordon, Art Ensemble of Chicago) et entame une longue aventure musicale avec Steve Lacy : 23 ans de tournée et plus de 25 albums.Dans les années 2000, il anime la scène parisienne au club Les Sept Lézards avec trois groupes maison et monte un atelier d’improvisation, le Ménilmontant Street Band. Toujours sur la route, notamment en Italie, il prépare aujourd'hui un nouveau projet, fidèle à son credo : rester intensément vivant.
