Veronica Swift
vocalsAbout
On Sunday June 12th at 7pm, Veronica Swift will give her first area concert since placing second in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal competition last fall. Swift, a graduate of Albemarle High School, and daughter of jazz singer Stephanie Nakasian and pianist Hod O’Brien, will graduate from The University of Miami’s Frost School of Music later this year with a degree in jazz voice.
Veronica was chosen for the Monk Institute honor by an esteemed panel of vocalists: Patti Austin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Freddy Cole, Al Jarreau and Luciana Souza. Jazz Times magazine says she “gave a master class on space and dynamics” on Monk’s I Mean You, and her rendition of Benny Carter's Lonely Woman, accompanied only by pianist Reginald Thomas, showed her to be “an adept lyrical interpreter.” She recently performed with Michael Feinstein at Lincoln Center, and will be a featured performer at this year’s Telluride and San Francisco Jazz Festivals. Her latest CD, Lonely Woman, is due out this year....
