Winard Harper & Jeli Posse Perform at The Outer Space

Hamden, CT, March 28, 2013 — New York based group, Winard Harper & Jeli Posse will appear at The Outer Space Jazz Series, April 14, 2013. Promoter and musician, Nick “Jazz” Di Maria initiated the series at the craft beer bar and music venue. Past guests have included Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Greene, Peter Bernstein, and Wayne Escofferey.

Baltimore native, Winard Harper is no stranger to the area. He was mentored by Jackie McLean at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of music, taught at the Artist Collective and Litchfield Jazz Camp and has performed in many local venues and festivals through the years. Former local band members include Lummie Spann, Josh Evans, Jovan Alexandre and Stephen “King” Porter. Porter appears on the group’s chart topping recent release, Coexist, and will perform with the group on April 14.

Harper's lifelong jazz apprenticeship has taken him around the world with the likes of Betty Carter, Ray Bryant, Jimmy Heath, Johnny Griffin, Dr. Billy Taylor and Dexter Gordon. Influences include Jackie McLean, Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Cannonball Adderley, and Billy Higgins. "Higgins had a big impact on me as a person and musician. He played with such joy. He saw jazz as spiritual and social work and walked the talk. We’re happy to be a part of building the audience for jazz in Hamden.”

Cover charge for the 6 - 8 p.m. event is $10. Parking is free. Specialty beers and pizza will be available for purchase.
