Join in with your voice or your instrument (and feel free to mute your own singing/playing) as Michael Harrison shares an introduction to the Kirana lineage of Khayal singing he learned from his Gurus Pandit Pran Nath, Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, Terry Riley and La Monte Young.
Together, we'll experience the basics of raga, from structural principles to improvisation, and ways of combining raga with Western musical approaches. Come explore the beauty and the techniques of raga in this nurturing environment, and learn how these rich traditions can illuminate your own musical voice.

About Michael Harrison
Composer/pianist Michael Harrison’s works blend classical music traditions of Europe and North India. He seeks expressions of universality via the physics of sound – music that brings one into a state of concentrated listening as a meditative and even mind-altering experience. Harrison is a Guggenheim Fellowship and NYFA Artist Fellowship recipient. His latest release Seven Sacred Names reached the top 10 classical albums on Billboard and was called “music of positively intoxicating beauty” in The New Yorker.
He's been a member of MFM since 2021.

About Roger Blanc
Roger Blanc is a guitarist, composer and music prep person with Masters in Composition from Juilliard. He’s had music performed at Alice Tully Hall, CAMI Hall, The Whitney Museum Sculpture Court and overseas. He has worked on music for media including television (the Tonight Show, Saturday Night Live, David Letterman), film (ca. sixty feature films including Frida, The Untouchables, Wag The Dog), the record industry (Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, Luciano Pavarotti), and live performance (Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden). He lives in New York City and performs frequently at local venues. He has a particular interest in the utilization of non-western scales and modes for both composing and improvising.
Besides being a Local 802 member, he’s been on MFM’s board since 2018.
