The Jazz Improvisation and Theory 1 workshop is open to all instrumentalists and vocalists who have the desire to improvise. From the piano chair, Iสผll gladly share with you my knowledge and experience as an improviser from the perspective of sideman, leader, composer, and arranger. The concept I emphasize is to first explore the outside view (the big picture โ some of the components are the song structure, style and where it sits within a performance set โ the context). Followed by the inside view (the individual approach โ one component being how you balance your solo with emotion and intellect โ the content). Context informs content. The fundamentals of music โ melody, harmony, bass and rhythm โ will also be explored through improvisation via scales, chords, linear and harmonic sequences, song forms, meters, grooves and feels, phrasing, articulation, and much more. Becoming a discerning listener and observer will facilitate your growth as a player and so weสผll discuss recordings, youtube performances, and class performances as well....
