Hard Rubber Orchestra will premiere Lussier’s new work as well as excerpts from “Le Vaisseau d’Or”, a piece the composer wrote for the Orchestra almost 20 years ago. Known for his quirky and humorous “Zappa-esque” style of composing, the Montreal-born Lussier is one of the leading figures of musique actuelle, a term that derives from a fusion of jazz, rock, classical and improvisation. The inventive musician has collaborated extensively with Fred Frith, Jean Derome, and is a co-founder of Ambiances Magnétiques, one of the largest and most active experimental music labels in Canada.

Formed by artistic director Korsrud in 1990, the Hard Rubber Orchestra has consistently been one of Canada's most active and unpredictable ensembles of creative music. Over the past 25 years, the Society has produced both concerts and larger theatrical works including operas, avant ice shows, arts raves and commissioned more than 50 new works by composers Kenny Wheeler, Darcy James Argue, Scott Good, Brad Turner, Phil Dwyer, Michael Blake, Fred Stride, Hugh Fraser, Linda Bouchard, Howard Bashaw, Jean Derome and René Lussier among others.

In 2017, Hard Rubber New Music Society will present RIOT in partnership with Electric Company Theatre and SFUW.
