Born Joanne Grogan, Ms.Brackeen found her way to her parents’ grand piano at an early age, although actual lessons were short-lived. Her free-spirit and frustrations with formal piano instruction led this piano prodigy to her to teach herself. She memorized Charlie Parker and Bud Powell tunes and was transcribing entire piano solos from recordings and playing professionally at the age of 11. She went on to attend the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music but her student days were brief and soon moved herself and her family to New York in 1965 to advance her career. There, she met and played with Paul Chambers, Sonny Stitt, Woody Shaw, Lee Konitz, and George Benson.

In addition to her tenure with the Jazz Messengers (1969–72), she performed extensively with Joe Henderson (1972–75) and Stan Getz (1975–77) before leading her own trio and quartet. Her trios featured such noted players as Clint Houston, Eddie Gomez, John Patitucci, Jack DeJohnette,Cecil McBee, and Billy Hart.

Ms. Brackeen established herself as a cutting edge pianist and composer through her appearances around the world. She has written over 350 compositions and appears on nearly 100 records. Her solo performances also cemented her reputation as one of the most innovative and dynamic of pianists; along with Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and McCoy Tyner. Metroland declared her one of the greatest living pianists, hands down, no footprints!

Always a trailblazer, Ms. Brackeen initiated the "Live at Maybeck Hall" Solo Piano Series on Concord Records; which resulted in more than 40 volumes of solo and duo projects. Currently on sabbatical, the near future will find Joanne performing and recording a new solo piano disc of the 20 new compositions she has just composed.

Although almost entirely self-schooled, she is committed to sharing her musical knowledge and passing the tradition to others. Currently, she is a professor at Berkelee College of Music and The New School, and has received commissions and has led and is sought after for clinics, masterclasses and residencies worldwide.

Ms. Brackeen has not slowed down and continues to tour nationally and internationally. To witness her live is to be enchanted by the whole history and future of jazz; all with a contemporary edge.
