"You can hear songwriter Spottiswoode’s English origins in his accent, which sounds like a roughed-up version of Ray Davies. Similarly, the music suggests such messy Brit romantics as Syd Barrett and Art Brut." TIME OUT NEW YORK

Spott will be joined by two of his Enemies, John Young on bass and Kevin Cordt on trumpet. "It's the first time I've ever played with either of them in a stripped down trio format," says the Englishman. "It will be a full scale war of attrition. I wonder who'll win? John's fingers, my vocal chords or Kevin's lips? What a great way to start off the fall season of shows."

SPOTTISWOODE & HIS ENEMIES (BIO)
Referred to as a "genius" by The New Yorker, Spottiswoode is the son of an American singer and an English clergyman. WNYC's John Schaefer describes him as "one of New York's more colorful band leaders for more than a decade." For the past fifteen years, the Englishman has been the frontman of Spottiswoode & His Enemies, a septet that has become a New York institution. With the band, Spottiswoode has released five acclaimed CDs and toured worldwide from SXSW and Lille Europe to Lincoln Center. They have been profiled on NPR's Weekend Edition and featured on nationally syndicated radio programs such as XM Loft and World Cafe with David Dye.
Spottiswoode's songs have been covered by numerous artists and featured in a variety of television shows and films (She's Out Of My League, The Ledge, Tart, Bridget), as well as in his own short film, The Gentleman, which he wrote, directed and scored, and which played for several years on the Independent Film Channel. His gothic rock opera, Above Hell's Kitchen, was presented to sold-out crowds at the prestigious New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2010.
In 2012, Spottiswoode & His Enemies won 2 Independent Music Awards for their fifth record, Wild Goosechase Expedition, a critically hailed "miracle" (popdose) about a rock band's doomed wartime tour. Awards included Best Adult Contemporary Song (for the piano ballad, Chariot) and the Vox Populi Award for Best Eclectic Album. Ironically,Spottiswoode has always bristled at that particular description of the band's music. "We are expressionists!" he pleads. Yes, his songs travel the gamut from raw rock and roll anthems, confessional jazz ballads and gospelinflected hymns to vaudevillian ditties. Yes, he has drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Ray Davies, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. And yes, His Enemies are comfortable in a multitude of musical genres and always happy to switch gears and instruments. WXPN's Dan Reed concurs: "They do something that few bands can do: evoke real emotions, sometimes several different ones in a single song." Paste Magazine describes the live show as "nothing short of transportive!"

RAVES FOR SPOTTISWOODE AND HIS ENEMIES' WILD GOOSECHASE EXPEDITION:
The Daily Vault, Jason Warburg “If you mixed the laconic, cheeky British cool of Ian Hunter with the brooding urbanity of Leonard Cohen, added the balls-out Broadway showmanship of Bat Out Of Hell composer Jim Steinman, and sprinkled it all with the self-deprecating panache of James Bond, you might emerge with Jonathan Spottiswoode’s less interesting twin brother, because he’s clearly more demented than that.”
babysue “Spottiswoode has a real knack for writing smart memorable catchy pop tunes that could easily appeal to millions of listeners.”
Dingus “Seventeen tracks of diamond studded song writing,…”
Stephen Carradini/Independent Clauses “A brilliant overview of pop music….fascinating…From the get-go, Spottiswoode pummels listeners with hook after hook..”
Deli New York "Maybe you haven’t heard yet, but Spottiswoode & His Enemies have been quietly channeling New York’s late night spirit for well over a decade now. The band knows how to tell a story, because they’ve probably lived it before you had your first drink. With a voice carving a space between Warren Zevon and Ian dury, singer/songwriter Young Spott’s work takes you on a journey to a place inhabitated by hedonism and romance, but few regrets."
Pete Chianca, Popdose “It’s a good bet that whoever says there’s no such thing as an original idea — in music or otherwise — has not taken a good close listen to Spottiswoode…Theatrical rock adventures…with elements of jazz, folk, Broadway and Leonard Cohen-style poetic musings… on I’d Even Follow You to Philadelphia, Spottiswoode croaks out what may be the best love song ever to channel the spirit of W.C. Fields….In an era of popular music that’s invariably pre-packaged and easily labeled, “Wild Goosechase Expedition is a small miracle — and a trip worth taking. Pack your bug spray.”
Heaven Magazine, Pieter Wijnstekers “Since we spotted the phenomenal Brit operating out of New York, Jonathan Spottiswoode, five years ago (then with multi-instrumentalist Riley McMahon as S&M) we have been a fan of this determined Englishman. He consistently proves his knowledge of the classics (from Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen to Van Morrison and Ray Davies) and seamlessly adds a new spin to it. With his supporting band, His Enemies, Spottiswoode explores the more folk/pop-type elements of his music on the new “Wild Goosechase Expedition,” which is supported by beautiful (wind instrument) arrangements and perfectly fitting rock-like beats. It gives the long, four-piece concept album a very unique character that – as you can see by the somewhat “Sgt. Pepper” looking cover – could be given homage to the Beatles, but musically it goes its own direction with little Beatle-esque qualities.”
