There has finally been a regain of interest for the band that first created what came to be known as Psychedelic cumbia. In 2017, the band released their first new recording since the early 80âs (Ikaro del Amor, Barbès Records) and toured the US, Mexico and Europe. Collaborations with the likes of Eblis Alvarez of Meridian Brothers, or Dengue Dengue Dengue have given them a new visibility that allows them to follow their experimental instincts. The groupâs sound is more vibrant than ever. This is not a nostalgia act cashing in on newfound interest in its history, but a cutting edge group that has finally found a worldwide audience that understands its music. Los Wembler's de Iquitos released a new album "Vision de Ayahuasca" (2019) at Barbès Records. They toured internationally in 2019 and are now coming back, playing their first Danish concert at ALICE this September.

I 1968 i Iquitos, hovedstaden i den peruvianske del af Amazonas-regnskoven, startede skomageren Solomon Sanchez et band med sine fem sønner. Som det første band i Amazonas der spillede lokale, oprindelige rytmer pĂĽ elektrisk guitar, skabte Los Wemblers de Iquitos hybriden âchicaâ, som senere blev kendt som psykedelisk cumbia eller cumbia amazonica, og som skulle komme til at fĂĽ en enorm indflydelse pĂĽ sydamerikansk populĂŚrmusik.
Iquitos er verdens største isolerede by med sin beliggenhed midt i Amazonas og flere dages rejse fra den nĂŚrmeste hovedvej. Los Wemblersâ musik havde derfor rødder i byens sĂŚregne fusion af omkringliggende regnskov, ĂŚldgammel folklore og samtidig det urbane liv, men musikstrømmen fra radioen - deres primĂŚre link til omverdenen - kom ogsĂĽ til at spille en helt sĂŚrlig rolle. Inspiration fra brasiliansk carimbo, San Juanitos fra Equador, venezuelansk joropos, psykedelisk rock og ikke mindst colombiansk cumbia, blev inkorporeret i Los Wemblers de Iquitos helt sĂŚrlige lyd, som blev udbredt som chica og senere kendt som psykedelisk cumbia.
Los Wemblers de Iquitos havde et rygende aktivt ĂĽrti i 1970âerne med 3 LP-udgivelser om ĂĽret og konstante tournĂŠer rundt i Latinamerika, men populariteten ebbede ud i 80âerne da den elektroniske cumbia tog over. Selvom bandet blev ved med at spille lokale shows i hjembyen, genopdagede verden først chica-pionererne efter to ĂĽrtier, da de medvirkede pĂĽ Barbès Records omsamlingsalbum âRoots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peruâ (2007). Los Wemblers de Iquitos gav inspiration for en hel generation af musikere indenfor tropical og elektronisk musik, og deres velfortjente revival førte til samarbejder med navne som Dengue Dengue Dengue og Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers).
I 2017 udgav Barbès Records Los Wemblers de Iquitos første udgivelse i 25 ĂĽr, EPâen âIkaro del Amorâ og i 2019 "Vision de Ayahuasca", som begge sendte dem pĂĽ tournĂŠer i hele verden. Med mere kant, vildskab, musikalsk nysgerrighed og spilleglĂŚde end nogensinde, indtager den peruvianske septet Europa til efterĂĽret og rammer ALICE. En oplevelse man ikke mĂĽ snyde sig selv for!
