Music of the Kennedy White House at Dallas City Performance Hall

Taking place in November as Dallas honors the memory of President Kennedy in the 50th year after his assassination, the UNT College of Music presents a program in celebration of the lasting impact of the Kennedy White House on the arts in America. Music of the Kennedy White House will feature repertoire chosen from three of the most historically significant White House concerts presented by the Kennedys:

• A 1962 performance featuring the Paul Winter Sextet in the first concert setting for jazz in the White House, along with the appearance of a young pianist Tong Il Han (who would later join the faculty of the College of Music at UNT)....

Music of the Kennedy White House will feature repertoire chosen from three of the most historically significant White House concerts presented by the Kennedys:

• A 1962 performance featuring the Paul Winter Sextet in the first concert setting for jazz in the White House, along with the appearance of a young pianist Tong Il Han (who would later join the faculty of the College of Music at UNT).

• A 1961 recital featuring legendary cellist Pablo Casals with pianist Mieczyslaw Horzowski – perhaps the most celebrated of the recitals held in the Kennedy White House.

• A 1962 recital by Grace Bumbry (mezzo soprano) with pianist Charles Wadsworth. This performance was given by the legendary African-American mezzo-soprano shortly after she gained international renown from being cast as Venus in Tannhäuser at Bayreuth.

UNT faculty artists performing in the concert include Eugene Osadchy (cello), Elvia Pucinelli and Gustavo Romero (piano), and a jazz group featuring Brad Leali, John Murphy, Mike Steinel, Stefan Karlsson, Lynn Seaton and Ed Soph. Additionally, the Grace Bumbry repertoire will be sung by UNT's current Margot Winspear Opera Scholar, mezzo-soprano Chaazi Munyanya.
