This Week at All About Jazz

Over the past year, we've made major improvements to our newsletter, making the entire platform more efficient and easier to manage. Modernizing our newsletter was necessary as using paid platforms like Kit, MailChimp and Constant Contact for a 91,000+ mailing list was prohibitive. Recently, we split our newsletter into two editions: All About Jazz arrives every Thursday, and Jazz Near You follows on Friday, allowing us to focus on each newsletter individually. Previously, assembling the All About Jazz newsletter took 8–12 hours a week, but thanks to the magic of automation, we've streamlined the creation of most sections and built a digital place for storing and reusing common text. These upgrades have slashed newsletter production time by a whopping 85%. That's a massive win for the guy who composes the weekly newsletter. Viva la technology!

A Brief Guide To Ukrainian Jazz: Part 3

The third installment of A Brief Guide To Ukrainian Jazz—a series developed with the cooperation of the Ukrainian Institute—introduces five more highly talented jazz artists/groups from Ukraine. The vast range of personal musical identities attests to the strength, depth and originality of contemporary Ukranian jazz. Leléka Victoria Leléka is the voice and driving force of Leléka, a multi-national folk-jazz quartet founded in Berlin in 2016. Fusing the improvisational freedom of jazz with Ukrainian folk, Leléka has harvested a heap of prizes that recognize the group's originality. A series of EPs, including music for the 12-part television historical saga There Will Be People (2020), paved the way for the band's debut full-length album, Sonce u Serci (GLM Music, 2021). Alongside timeless folk themes of love and nature, Leléka also addressed the Chernobyl disaster in darkly poetic terms. Continue reading...

Beyond Genre: Brian Marsella’s Expanding Musical Universe

Brian Marsella is a pianist and composer whose work defies easy categorization. Whether leading his genre-blurring trio with bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Kenny Wollesen , or collaborating with avant-garde luminary John Zorn, Marsella brings a rare blend of technical brilliance and emotional depth to every performance. Born in Philadelphia and based in New York since 1998, Marsella has carved out a unique space in the jazz and experimental music scenes. His projects span a broad creative spectrum, from the expansive, cinematic soundscapes of iMAGiNARiUM to the Brazilian-inspired rhythms and festive spirit of Gatos do Sul. He leads The Modulators, a group inflected with surf-rock energy and retro charm, and is part of the poetic, percussive duo Archipelago X with vibraphonist Sae Hashimoto. His trio, featuring Dunn and Wollesen, has become a dynamic force on the contemporary jazz scene, praised for its adventurous interplay and emotional immediacy. Continue reading...

Swinging Scores—How Jazz Shaped Bollywood’s Golden Age

This piece—the first in a five-part series on the Indian jazz revival—focuses on the heavy imprint of jazz on Indian cinema, specifically Bollywood during its golden age between the 1940s and 1970s. It's a story about how a music born in New Orleans made its way to Bombay, and how, for a few wild and brilliant decades, it seeped into the sonic fabric of Hindi-language cinema, leaving behind echoes we can still hear today. This article draws heavily from Naresh Fernandes's Taj Mahal Foxtrot, which is a definitive history of jazz in India. The book traces how swing, bebop, and big band music arrived in Bombay in the early 20th century, shaped the city's nightlife, and eventually found their way into the DNA of Bollywood film scores.   What Is Bollywood? "Bollywood" is the informal name for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Continue reading...
