Karima el Fillali was born in the Westland region of Holland as the child of a Dutch pastor’s daughter and Moroccan father. She grew up between the region’s renowned flower and tomato greenhouses with fanciful stories that took place in the vastness of northern seas and southern deserts. Her parents had her study classical music vocals, guitar and piano. In vain, something she regretted later in life. She flew to Morocco, took Arabic lessons and apprenticed herself to a Sufi singer. Besides performing well known numbers of this legendary Egyptian vocalist, El Fillali will also recite from the Andalusian muwashahat – a rich Oriental poetry tradition. She will be accompanied by her sources of musical inspiration Jamil Al Asadi and Abderrahim Semlali as well as three other members of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra.
