Mediterranean mosaic by four virtuosos
The Mediterranean Sea links Africa and the Arabic world with Europe. In the wake of the Odyssey Lingua Franca set sail along the rich musical traditions of the surrounding lands. South and North are the coordinates with oud, tanbur, violin and percussion as navigational instruments. Whereas in the Netherlands they are the best kept secret in the underground scene, abroad this ensemble’s true value is recognized with rave reviews. Accordingly, Lingua Franca is a quartet phenomenally making music that modulates between dreamy soundscapes and stirring melodies.
Moments of euphoria invariably occur during their concerts, instances in which performer and audience merge. Their debut album was not called ‘Ephemera’ for nothing: “In the way photographs capture an image, they use music to distil emotions that under different circumstances would evaporate”. The power of expression of their repertoire is truly a lingua franca, a language that everyone understands and that moves them.
