Y’ALL of NYC presents Dr. Salim Washington to Perform at Dwyer Cultural Art Center, Part of The Uptown Tea Series
New York, NY – Y’ALL of NYC presents Dr. Salim Washington, will perform at The Uptown Tea Series, a monthly new art series, Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 2:00 pm at The Dwyer Cultural Art Center. Loft Arts Productions produces The Uptown Tea Series in association with Arts & Education Continuum.
Y'All of NYC features Dr. Salim Washington, will perform recent compositions on tenor saxophone, flute and oboe, accompanied by bass and drums. Dr. Washington, co-author of Clawing at the Limits of Cool, on the music of Coltrane and Miles, will also discuss “Writing about jazz and how it impacts his music”.
Nioka Workman, curator of The Uptown Tea Series, is excited about having Y’ALL of NYC feature Dr. Salim Washington and perform as part of the monthly program.
“As co-author of a new novel Clawing at the Limits of Cool, on the music of Coltrane and Miles , and an exceptional musician, Dr. Salim Washington’s world travels inform his music and musical discussions.” said Ms.Workman. “Loft Arts Productions is very excited about Y’ALL of NYC presents Dr. Salim’s performance and discussion taking place in an intimate space like the Dwyer Cultural Center. This rare opportunity is a treat for jazz fans and historians.”
Dr. Salim Washington grew up in Detroit, Mi., he completed his doctorate and headed to New York to begin a professorship at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. Dr Washington has traveled extensively, playing music festivals and workshops around the world, including the Northern Ireland Arts Council in Belfast, The Bill Evans Conservatory in Paris, and others. Salim has played for "James Jabbo Ware and The Me We & Them Orchestra". Dr. Washington is a member of the Jazz Study Group at Columbia University, has participated on various committees and panels in service of jazz, including those convened by the Ford Foundation, the Boston Phoenix, the New England Foundation for the Arts.
In addition to his work as an artist, Dr. Washington’s collaboration with Farah Jasmine Griffin for the recently-published Clawing at the Limits of Cool, the two scholars chronicle the drama of the musical relationship between Miles Davis and John Coltrane, from their initial historic partnership to the interlude of their breakup, during which each man made tremendous progress toward his personal artistic goals. The book even continues with the last leg of their journey together, a time when the Miles Davis group, featuring John Coltrane, forever changed the landscape of jazz.
