Oliver Steidle – namesake of the quartet and winner of the 2022 German Jazz Award in the category „Drummer of the Year“ – has been one of the hottest, most accomplished and forward-looking musicians of the young European avant-garde for quite some time. Through numerous, prominent engagements and his own bands Oli Steidle & the killing Popes, Oliwood and SoKo Steidle, he has found his place in the international concert scene, and it is impossible to imagine life there without him.
He has been a member of PHILM (German Jazz Award 2021 Band of the Year), Der Rote Bereich, Klima Kalima , played with Peter Brötzmann, Andrea Parkins, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Aki Takase, Louis Sclavis, Tristan Honsinger, Trevor Dunn, and many others, jets ceaselessly through the world, writes music, is undogmatic, has won numerous prizes and played at all important, noteworthy festivals.
The same goes for Rudi Mahall, Henrik Walsdorff and Jan Roder, who, like Steidle, are among the spearheads of the international avant-garde.
Here, in the collective of excellent musicians, enormously versatile and atmospheric sound creations emerge, ranging from rivalry to harmonious interplay. Spontaneity and freedom in playing and the necessary responsibility to create without guidelines are the important foundations for this music. Furthermore, in addition to the dedication to the cause, it requires the ability to find together, i.e. to find an optimal combination of personnel in the ensemble.
So it is not surprising that Alexander von Schlippenbach once wrote about SoKo Steidle: They play together like devils and swing like motherfuckers.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary, a new album will be released in 2022 – it will feature the old master himself Alexander von Schlippenbach, who will be a guest at all SoKo concerts during the course of the release.
Update: Unfortunately, Alexander von Schlippebach will not be able to participate.
