As part of a recognition for Black History Month, the John Calloway Quartet (with special guests) will perform jazz and blues pieces as well as original themed material in tribute to the history and legacy of African American Buffalo soldiers that were stationed in the Philippines during the American occupation of 1898-1902. Many stayed in the Philippines and intermarried with the native peoples, leaving a culture and legacy of Afro-Filipinos there and in the U.S.

Dr. John Calloway is a nationally recognized multi-instrumentalist/composer/educator who has performed with Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Orlando “Marca” Valle and Max Roach, and in the Bay Area with John Santos and Marcus Shelby. John has written for several GRAMMY nominated recordings, was awarded an Emmy in 2019 for his composition “No Hay Nada Mas SF,” and arranged music for the HBO movie “Hemingway & Gelhorn.” He has several recording projects, including the CD “Asere Ko” (2016). John currently directs the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco, the Afro-Cuban Ensemble of San Francisco State University and has led the Flute Odyssey Project since 2008....
